What Is Cub Scouting?

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in 1st through 5th grade. Each Pack is a member of a larger group called a District (ours is Voyageur Trace). Each District is a member of larger group called a Council (ours is Des Plaines, located in La Grange). Finally, each Council is a member of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA for short). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting.

The 10 purposes of Cub Scouting are:
  • Character Development
  • Sportsmanship and Fitness
  • Friendly Service
  • Spiritual Growth
  • Family Understanding
  • Fun and Adventure
  • Good Citizenship
  • Respectful Relationships
  • Preparation for Boy Scouts
  • Personal Achievement

FAQs

What are the age requirements to join Cub Scouts?
Boys join a Cub Scout Pack (ours is Pack 73) and are assigned to a Den,usually made up of six to eight boys of the same age. The dens are: Lion Cubs (Kindergartners), Tiger Cubs (first-graders), Wolf Cub Scouts (second-graders), Bear CubScouts (third-graders), and Webelos Scouts (fourth- and fifth-graders). After Webelos, scouts graduate into Boy Scouting.

What activities are offered to my son through Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting means "doing" and everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting: citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in den and pack meetings.

When does the Pack meet?
Den Meetings - normally held the first two or three Tuesdays of each month. The room opens at 6:45 p.m. and the meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and end about 8:00 p.m. Your Den may schedule its own meetings and outings. Parents are expected to participate with their Scout in den meetings.

Pack Meetings - held monthly, usually the 4th Tuesday of each month. Meetings begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and end about 8:00 p.m.

Can the whole family attend?
Scouting is for the entire family and all Cub Scouts and their families participate in activities and refreshments at a Pack Meeting. Monthly scout awards are given also given out at this time.Den and Pack meetings are held from September through May in Fellowship Hall at the Westchester Community Church. In addition to these meetings, we often schedule an outing or special event each month and meet at special summer events.

Who pays for scouting?
The cost is shared by youth members and their parents; members of the Pack; our Chartered Organization, WCC; our Council; and the BSA. Our Annual Pack Joining Fee covers the BSA Scout Fee, Boys’ Life magazine, and most awards and den supplies. There are no weekly dues.

Fundraising pays for most of the additional Pack/Den expenses like outings and special events, as well as Pinewood Derby kits, rockets, trophies, etc. Fundraising is an annual need, without it the cost to the individual Scout and his family would be significantly higher. Fundraising is done in the fall and requires all members to participate. It’s also a valuable learning experience for boys to earn money to fund the activities they will later get to enjoy.
