What is the Cub Scout program?

Cub Scouts is the largest youth program run by the Boys Scouts of America. Cub Scouting is a year-round program uniquely designed to meet the needs of young boys and their parents. The program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness.  Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.  Family involvement is an essential part of Cub Scouting and parents are encouraged to play an active role in the program. All leadership positions either in the den or pack level are held by parents who volunteer their time. Through interaction between parents, leaders, and friends, boys learn citizenship, compassion, and courage. This family-and community-centered approach to learning means that Cub Scouting is truly time well spent.

Cub Scouts belong to a den that consists of boys the same age or grade. Each den has about 8-12 boys. All dens belong to a pack. Tiger Cubs are boys in the first grade, Wolf Scouts are boys in the second grade, Bear Scouts are boys in the third grade and Webelos Scouts are boys in the fourth and fifth grades. Webelos Scouts do more advanced activities that get them ready for Boy Scouts. Dens meet weekly for one hour, except on school holidays, and are led by a den leader, assistant den leader and other parents who plan the meetings to complete achievements and have fun. While boys can enter Cub Scouting at any age and at any time of year, Pack 305's program follows the academic calendar. The Boy Scout program is available to boys who are 11 years old who have completed the fifth grade.

The Cub Scout pack is sponsored or chartered by a church, a school or a civic organization. The chartered organization makes sure the pack has trained leaders, a place to meet, and exciting things to do. St. Rose of Lima Church in Miami Shores is Pack 305's chartered organization. The pack is run by parents who volunteer in the pack committee. The committee is responsible for planning yearly activities, recordkeeping, fundraising, ordering awards, etc. Pack 305 is an all volunteer pack.

At Pack 305 we have a calendar full of fun activities at the den and pack level. These might include a visit to a fire station, a walk at a nearby park, learning first aid, local field trips, how to plan meals, family camping and service projects. We also schedule fun events during the summer where Scouts learn new things and earn awards.

Cub Scouts wear a uniform to den and pack activities. Scouts are encouraged to wear their class A or dress uniform to all Scouting events. For den meetings, Scouts can wear their class B uniform which is a Pack T-shirt and blue pants. The T-shirt can be purchased from your den leader. Scouts must wear the class A uniform to all pack events and whenever specified.  A class A uniform can be purchased at the Scout Shop. The Pack also has gently used class A uniforms available to anyone who needs it. Please contact your den leader. Attached is the site to learn more about the class A uniform and where all the patches go on the uniform. We encourage all parents to attach or place awards on the uniform as soon as your son gets them. Attached is a map to the South Florida BSA Council site.
